All Hallows by the Tower (My Sight)
The church was founded in 675 by Eorconweald, Bishop of London, to server as a monastery in Barking. It is still sometime refereed to as All Hollows Barking. The church was rebuilt between 1000 and 1060, a doorway of reused roman tiles remains. In 1189 Richard 1 built the Lady Chapel, by tradition his heart is buried there. The chapel was demolished in 1547.In 1634 the church was rebuilt. The church was again rebuilt in 1650 after 27 barrels of gunpowder exploded in the church yard, killing many people and destroying over 50 houses. In 1658 the tower was rebuilt, this was the only London church to have work carried out on it during the Commonwealth. The church survived the fire of 1666, as Sir William Penn created a fire break. It was from the tower that Pepys watched the progress of the fire. In 1813 the church was repaired. In 1940 the whole church, apart from the tower was destroyed by German bombs. The current building dates from 1949-58, it was rebuilt in the gothic style, with a long nave, aisles, and a vaulted roof.

Probably the finest piece in the church is the font cover from 1682 accredited to Grinling Gibbons. The pulpit comes from the church of St. Swithin London Stone, which was also destroyed by the Germans. There a many brasses the oldest from 1389.

The church also servers as a visual terminator to Regent Street. The building was badly damaged in the 2nd World War, and was restored in 1957.

The design is a circular classic portico, with a needle like spire surrounded by a ring of free standing columns, faced in Bath stone.

An Augustinian monastery was founded in this area in 1253 by Humphrey de Bohun, Constable of England. The site covered the are bounded by London Wall, Copthall Avenue and Throgmorton Street. During the Peasants revolt Wat Tyler attacked the monastery and beheaded 13 Flemish monks. After the Dissolution of the Monasteries the land was given to Sir William Paulet, who built himself a town house. In 1550 Edward 5 allowed the nave of the church to be used by Dutch refugees, the rest was used to store corn, coal and wine. In 1600 most of the church was demolished. In 1844 what remained was used as warehouses. In 1862 it burned down and was rebuilt the following year. It was bombed in in 1940 and rebuilt in 1950-6.

Blackfriars Bridge (My Sight)
From the cutwaters columns of polished red granite were erected to support pulpit-like bays at pavement level. These were embellished by the sculptor J B Philip with sculpted birds and flowers in honour the original Black Friars. On the upstream side these show plants and freshwater birds, while on the downstream side they depict marine vegetation and seagulls. The low cast-iron balustrade completes the Venetian-Gothic effect. The bridge is 923 ft long and 70 wide. On 6 November 1869 the Queen Victoria opened the new bridge by driving over from the Surrey bank. She then carried on to inaugurate the newly-completed Holborn Viaduct.
Blackfriars Railway Bridge (St Pauls Bridge) (My Sight)
Following the re-organisation of the railways in 1923, the new Southern Railway moved all its long-distance and Continental traffic to Waterloo and Victoria. As a result St Pauls Station lost all but its local and suburban services. In 1937 St Pauls Station was renamed Blackfriars Station. By the mid-20th century the old bridge was considered too weak to carry modern trains and the obsolete railway bridge was eventually dismantled in 1984. Today all that is left are the ornate red columns of the original bridge. One of the cast-iron shields bearing the insignia of the LCDR can now be seen on display on the South Bank.

London Bridge (My Sight)

If anything can be seen as being the reason why a city grew in this location it is due to the river Thames. If you look at the geography of Britain it can be clearly seen that the Thames forms a massive barrier between the south east and the rest of the country. The lower reaches of the river are tidal, they reached what is nowadays London Bridge or there about. It also seems that in this area the river was shallow. Therefore this was the the point closest to the sea at where it was reasonably safe and easy to cross the river. It therefore became a natural focus for all routes from the Southeast to and from the north. When the Roman invaded Britain in 43 AD they landed in Kent, the most direct route to the northern parts of the country were of course via London. Fairly early on in the campaign they built the first bridge over the river and a settlement on Cornhill. Recently the remains of a foundation pier of this first bridge have been found very close to the current London Bridge, the line of the road to the bridge followed what is now Fish Street Hill.In 1014 it was burned down by King Ethelred to split up the Viking armies. In 1091 the rebuilt bridge was swept away in a gale. It burned down again in 1136.The first stone bridge was built in 1176, and the first houses appeared in 1201. This bridge was made up if 12 spans, the piers blocked the flow of the river and passing the bridge was similar to running rapids. Upstream a pool formed which would freeze over in winter, and would the the site of the "Frost Fairs". A fund was started to pay for the maintenance of the bridge, it was run from a house on the south side, known as Bridge house, hence Bridge House Estates. In 1212 fire broke out at both ends and 3,000 people died. In 1758 the houses were removed. In 1823 a new bridge with 5 spans was built. This bridge was sold to the Americans in 1972 and now stands in Lake Havasu City, Arizona. They believed they were buying Tower Bridge. The bridge used to act as a display ground for the heads of traitors. The view from the bridge is worth seeing.

Old Billingsgate Market (My Sight)
The current building on the site dates from 1877 and was designed by Sir Horace Jones. The building has a cast iron frame which allows from an open interior as is required for a market. The exterior is Renaissance in style. Until 1850 there was no actual market building, then one was built, but it quickly proved inadequate. The current build was commissioned to replace it.

There has been a market on this site since at least 1016, probably much earlier. In 1016 the first recorded toll regulations were issued. At this time it was not solely a fish market, all kinds of provisions were traded. In 1698 an act of parliament was passed that made Billingsgate "a free and open market for all sorts of fish", the purpose was to brake the monopoly of a group of fishmongers.

The site become ever less practicable for a market, being in the middle of the City, so in 1982 the fish market was relocated to the Isle of Dogs near to Docklands, and the building converted into offices.

Poultry 1 (My Sight)
Work on the building started in 1985 but it was not finished until 1998. Work was suspended in the early 1990’s due to the poor economy. Unfortunatly during this period tastes change and the building has never been fully appreviated, Prince Charles once refered to it as "glass stump". The archtect was James Stirling, and the developer Lord Palumbo. Palumbo originaly wanted to place a building designed by Mies van der Rohe on the site, but the plan was rejected at a public enquiry.

There is a restaurant, Coq d’Argent , and a garden on the roof, from there it is possible to appreciate the magnificent view.
